Uskmouth taking Wales “back to the dark ages”

CC RichardJo53

The second of three coal-fired units at Uskmouth power station has been re-kindled in a ceremony attended by the Economy Minister [1]. The power station was mothballed by its previous owners in March 2014 [2] but the first unit was re-started last June [3].

It pushes Welsh coal-fired capacity close to 2 GW, with Aberthaw contributing 1.7 GW to that total [4].

Coal-fired power stations are widely regarded as the most polluting form of electricity generation. The UK Government has committed to permanent closure of all coal power stations no later than 2025 [5].

Director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, Gareth Clubb, said:

“This is a massively retrograde step for electricity generation in Wales. We’re supposed to be committed to an exciting, high-tech, low-carbon future. Yet here we are putting the defibrillator to the oldest dinosaur of the energy era.

“With the pollution pouring out of Uskmouth’s chimneys once more, this step is literally taking Wales back to the dark ages.

“It beggars belief that the Economy Minister describes both this project and the M4 proposals as ‘sustainable’. It’s as if the Paris climate convention and Future Generations Act never happened”
